Game-Free Communication for Couples

featuring Stephen Karpman, MD

The development of friendships and romantic relationships goes through many stages. These stages are analyzed using transactional analysis insights, including 15 original concepts developed over the past 25 years by Stephen Karpman. In this lively presentation, articulated with clear diagrams and interesting examples, Dr. Karpman covers:

  • The ABCs of relationship development (attraction, bonding, communication) and relationship decline (agendas, bargaining, conflict)
  • The "Kid Grid," "Opener Styles," "Sibling Order Attraction," and "Lover Preferences"
  • Communication skills, including the "Three Rules of Openness" and "The Game Player's Rules of Miscommunication"
  • Listening and games
  • Communication control by ego state

Stephen Karpman, MD, is an ITAA Teaching Member and twice vice president of the organization. He was one of the founding members of the ITAA and the first ongoing editor of the Transactional Analysis Journal. He has authored over 30 publications and is a two-time winner of the Eric Berne Memorial Scientific Award: in 1972 for the drama triangle and in 1979 for his work on options. Currently, Dr. Karpman is an assistant clinical professor of psychiatry at the University of California at San Francisco.
